Where The Wild Things Hang…

Meetings with our top retailers during Tabletop is always a great way to find out what’s “hot” in home decor and we were surprised to hear that “tapestry taxidermy” is flying off the shelves walls at Bergdorf Goodman these days.  Perhaps their popularity stems from autumn bringing out the hunter in the all those Upper East Side socialites who are snapping up these “passe-murailles” by the dozens, or perhaps these whimsical creatures remind us to enjoy the season and all the natural beauty it has to offer, in and out of the woods.

Thankfully, no animals were harmed in the making of Frédérique Morrel’s art.  The horns and fur are real; the rest is a mix of taxidermy molds and vintage needlework.  While amusing and perhaps a bit shocking, the trophies that adorn the Seventh Floor are “tame” compared to some of Frédérique’s other work which include life size horses, deer, wild boar and even humans (which they call “ghosts”.)  If the artists’ goal is to “re-enchant” our world, then we think they’ve succeeded!

Hum, they might grow on me….. I don’t see them making their way over here anytime soon but they are very interesting and obviously quite decorative, could be fun to add one as a statement piece. The beetles freak me out though!

Hope you have a wonderful and safe Halloween whatever you are up to…..

I loved these since the first time I saw them at Bergdorf’s during Alessandra Branca’s installation there last year. They’re really great in person and some are quite tame in comparison. Wishing you lots of treats and few tricks!!

Oh my goodness – I didn’t see these when I was on the 7th floor last month. I always feel a little sad in a room full of hunting trophies, so like that they take a more artful and whimsical direction. Not quite right for my house, but I love the creativity.

Hope there’s lots of Halloween fun in your neighborhood tonight! XOXO
