Design on a Dime with Sara Gilbane

Country Charm

Country Charm

Design on a Dime, one of New York City’s most popular interior design benefits, opens tomorrow and we’re excited to be part of Sara Gilbane‘s vignette this year.  For the past decade, designers have been creating unforgettable mini-rooms using new merchandise donated by vendors with proceeds from the sale of these items (at deep discounts!) benefiting Housing Works, an charity that betters the lives of individuals living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

We’ve been longtime fans of Sara’s (read our post here) and jumped at the chance to be involved with such a talented designer for such a wonderful cause.  Sara’s classic modern-traditional style, which is equally at home in the city as it is in the country or by the sea, has graced the pages of Traditional Home, Elle Decor, Lonny and The New York Times.  Her most recent feature in House Beautiful was one of our favorites so we thought we’d revisit the Tudor home in Rye, NY today!

Kitchen Aides

Have you seen the new issue of House Beautiful yet?  Is it us, or is this magazine getting better and better?  We love the monthly columns like “I Love My Bed” (and our friend, Julia Berger, is profiled on page 40!), “Instant Room” and “The Next Wave” and many of the interiors profiled.  This month’s issue included a special section called “101 Kitchen and Bath Updates” and while many of the items listed were new to us, we were sad to see that some of our favorite kitchen aides didn’t make the list.  So for all of you, who like us, spend quite a bit of time cooking up a storm, these goodies are for you!

Shhh… Designer Secrets Inside!

We had a great time pouring over House Beautiful‘s colorful May issue, especially when top designers shared 101 of their best secrets.  Who knew that the best dog-proof floor covering is cowhide or that the only time white curtain lining should be used is with white curtains?  Well, we decided to put some of these designers to the test and see if they take their own advice when they design a space…

Jan Showers' Black Accents and Antiques

“Every room needs a touch of black. just as it needs at least one antique piece.” ~ Jan Showers

Tobi Fairley's Bench

“A bench at the foot of the bed should be no less than 2″ shorter than the mattress width.” ~ Tobi Fairley

Ann Wolf's Collection

“Make sure you display everything in your collection together.” ~ Ann Wolf

Lindsey Coral Harper's Wallpaper

“Use wallpaper in unexpected places: on the ceiling in a paneled room, in closets, hallways, and small foyers.  A great pattern or tecture in small spaces can be a prodigious twist!” ~ Lindsey Coral Harper

Christopher Peacock's Island

“I typically suggest an island 5′ wide by 8′ long.  You don’t want it to look like an aircraft carrier.” ~ Christopher Peacock

Peter Dunham's Curtains

“Hang curtains.  They make a room seem finished.  Think of them as the lipstick of decorating.” ~ Peter Dunham

Have you seen the issue?  What is your favorite design secret?
