Giveaway: House Beautiful Style Secrets

A Book That Everyone Needs!

According to House Beautiful‘s Editor in Chief, Sophie Donelson, every room needs a splash of unexpected color, glitter and glam, a “wow” moment or even something that says “touch me”…  And in her new book filled with the best and most beautiful rooms featured in the magazine, you’ll get simple and elegant advice from some of the biggest names in interior design to achieve the home of your dreams.

A Nod to The Past

For instance, in the chapter Every Room Needs a Grand Gesture, you will learn that “overscale is not the same as overdone” and that a “majestic” mirror can make a world of difference in creating space.

A “Wow” Moment

How about a lipstick red dining room to make an impact on your guests…

A Splash of Color

or adding a bit of Chinoiserie as a nod to the past?

Delightful Dogwood

Nature and flowers play a big role in bringing a room to life and this can be as easy as a large vase of spring blossoms in your living room or opening the French doors to incorporate an outdoor terrace.

Inside Out

One of the highlights of our visit to NY NOW yesterday was meeting Sophie in person and having her sign her book.  And just in time for Valentine’s Day, this beauty can be yours in this Giveaway!  If you’d like to win this signed book, leave a comment below, like today’s post on Instagram or Facebook or send us an email at TheBuzz.Giveaway@gmail.com with “House Beautiful Style Secrets” in the subject line.  You have until 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 11, 2018 to enter and we’ll announce the winner on Monday.  Good luck!

Celebrating Dear Carolina Day

Dear Carolina

Dear Carolina

While many were celebrating yesterday’s date with magaritas and Mexican fare, we were celebrating the launch of Dear Carolina, the first novel by North Carolina native and beautiful blogger, Kristy Woodson Harvey.  Having had a regatta-free weekend (woohoo!), we spent two days reveling in the Southern charm of this story – two strong but very real women who come together for the sake of a baby girl.  Kristy’s writing career began at UNC where she studied journalism and mass communications and was perfected through her blog, Design Chic, a family affair with her mother, Beth.

The Lovely Kristy

Kristy Woodson Harvey

Dear Carolina‘s richly developed characters (à la Steel Magnolias) live in a world where family comes first and colorful Southern idioms are as abundant as crepe myrtle.  You can’t help but be transported by the two female narrators and the tale they weave for baby Carolina.  So grab a copy, hop on a porch swing with a glass of sweet tea sangria, and prepare to be enchanted…

A Sketch a Day Giveaway from I Dream Of!

Day 5 - Our Bouquet (Original)

Day 5 – Our Bouquet (Original)

Jeanne, from the beautiful and creative blog, I Dream Of, started off the year giving herself a challenge – to paint on a daily basis – and using pictures she finds on Instagram, she’s doing just that (you can see her daily sketches here!)  Her goals are to be spontaneous and fast (her paintings take less than 30 minutes) and to not be afraid of making mistakes.  Five days into her challenge, a pretty posy popped up on her Instagram and it was the Blush Hydrangea and Ranunculus bouquet from our new Spring/Summer 2015 collection!  She said that the soft pinks and greens reminded her of bright spring days ahead…

With snow on the ground and frigid temps in the air, we thought we’d bring a bit of spring your way in the form of a giveaway!  While Jeanne is holding on to her original pieces, she did paint a copy of her day 5 sketch for us to give to one of our wonderful readers.  All you have to do is visit Jeanne’s Instagram page and let us know which is your favorite sketch with either a comment below or an email to thebuzz.giveaway@gmail.com!  She’s painted 30 so far and they’re all so lovely.  We’re partial to her florals but we also love her sketches of Paris…  Did we mention that Jeanne is also a world traveler?

Giveaway: Tom Scheerer Decorates

A Holiday Treat!

A Holiday Treat!

When talented interior designer Tom Scheerer is not flying off to the sunny beaches of Maine, Nantucket, Florida or The Bahamas, he’s relaxing in the Hamptons at our mother’s club.  She’s a huge fan of his, as are we – that’s why it was really exciting for us to meet him in person last week at the Antiquarius Holiday Boutique where he was signing copies of his new book, Tom Scheerer Decorates.  Soft-spoken and elegant, he’s was exactly how we had imagined him!

A Kitchen in Palm Beach

A Living Room in Hobe Sound

A Living Room in Hobe Sound

With a style that he describes as “cheerful”, “no nonsense” and a touch “underbaked”, Tom’s interiors are as fresh and relaxing as the locations where his clients reside.  His book is filled with beautiful rooms, each with its own comfortable character that is so laid back, it’s hard to call the space “decorated.”  As David Netto (another member of mother’s club) wrote in The New York Times about Tom’s philosophy, “It’s about celebrating real life, and remembering that the chicest thing of all, when you can have whatever you want, is to be yourself.”

With snow falling for the third time in eight days here and Christmas just around the corner, we thought this signed book of lovely interiors (many of which are in warmer climes like the Lyford Cay Club!) would be the perfect giveaway – and a great last minute gift for yourself or someone else!  All you need to do is leave a comment below or email us at thebuzz.giveaway@gmail.com with “Tom Scheerer Decorates” in the subject line.  You have until 11:59 pm on Sunday, December 22, 2013 to enter and we’ll announce the winner on Monday, the 23rd.  We’ll even send the book by UPS Overnight so you can have in time for Christmas!

Giveaway: The Well-Traveled Home

Book Your Trip!

Book Your Trip!

With our childhood spent browsing Belgian brocantes (a.k.a junk stores) and traveling around markets in Asia and Europe, we’ve collected many treasures that are now displayed in our homes.  Each has its own story and together, these collected pieces create a sense of worldliness and adventure that perhaps our daily lives do not necessarily reflect.

Terrace Treasures

Tranquil Terrace

That’s why we couldn’t wait to review Sandra Espinet’s beautiful new book, The Well-Traveled Home.  This California and Mexico based designer has lived the life of a “transcontinental nomad” and the experience has allowed her to capture the “evolving interplay of the domestic and the international”, all the while creating alluring and comfortable spaces for her clients.

Bedroom Blues

Bedroom Blues

Leafing through the pages of Sandra’s book was like taking a mini-vacation – we were transported into the luxurious homes of those who live the well-traveled life where a French rococo mirror reflects a bed made with colorful Fortuny fabrics and where a Guatemalan cabinet is accessorized with Coptic crosses and Moroccan urns.  Best of all, Sandra tells the stories behind her best finds and shares some of her favorite shopping haunts and design tips with her readers.

Meeting Chef Joanne Weir and Giveaway

Copita's Shrimp Aguachiles

What do you get when you cross a bona fide celebrity chef with over 20 cookbooks, two cooking shows on PBS and a James Beard award to her name (Joanne Weir) with a well known restaurateur (Larry Mindel) and add a couple of margaritas to the mix?  A tequileria and authentic Mexican eatery in Sausalito called Copita!

Copita - Tequileria y Comida

According to Joanne, it all started when Larry challenged her to a “margarita off” and hers won, hands down.  Given that Larry has wanted to open a Mexican restaurant in Sausalito for the past 40 years, he asked Joanne to help…  and after two margaritas, she said “Sure!”

THE Copita Margarita

What makes Copita such a fun place is not only its laid back California vibe and wall of tequilas (yes, the bar is a showcase for the yummy stuff!) but also its passion for local, artisanal ingredients and a menu that changes on a seasonal basis.  Our favorites included the hand pressed tortillas with Joanne’s special tomatillo sauce, 24-hour carnitas, the wild mushroom tacos and the Copita salad topped with chicken fresh from the wood-fired rotisserie all served on Heath ceramics (also local!)

Joanne Weir's Chardonnay

The best part of our meal was meeting Joanne, who came up and started chatting with us as we oohed and ahhed over the best margarita ever (see recipe here.).  Full disclosure:  we didn’t recognize Joanne at first but as soon as she introduced herself, we knew exactly who she was since Cynthia’s been cooking her “Pork Roasted the Way the Tuscan Do” for ages.  This, of course, lead to a discussion of Joanne’s numerous cookbooks and her latest work, Tequilas: A Guide to Types, Flights, Cocktails and Bites, as well as her pouring us a glass of her brand new Chardonnay from Sonoma Valley.  Needless to say, Joanne was the cherry (or lime) on top of an already fabulous day!

Tequila!

We’re thrilled to be giving away a signed copy of Joanne’s book today!  All you need to do to enter is leave a comment below or send us an email at TheBuzz.Giveaway@gmail.com with “Tequila” in the subject line by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, 2012 and we’ll choose a lucky winner on Monday, June 18.  Additional entries will be given if you “like” us on Facebook, or tweet about the giveaway using @DianeJamesHome and @JoanneWeirCook.
