This or That?

Pretty Pastels – Jil Sander Fall 2012

Antwerp-based Belgian florist extraordinaire Mark Colle has been busy this year…   especially when Raf Simons (who’s also Belgian) decides to have him create floral fantasies for not one, but two of his fashion shows.

Blooms in a Box

The first was for Raf’s last collection for Jil Sander back in March where beautiful blossoms were encased in glass boxes, seven in all, to mark the number of years he spent with the label.

Botanical Beauty

Mark then designed the fabulous floral rooms for Raf’s first couture collection under the Dior name that took the blogging and Twitter world by storm in early July.

Christian Dior – Couture 2012

Over a million fresh flowers were used to decorate a Parisian “hotel particulier” as a backdrop to a collection that paid homage to Mr. Dior’s “Flower Women” and passion for gardens.

Peonies, Dahlias, Carnations and Roses

It’s no wonder the audience was left breathless… even the video about the creation of the botanical bonanza is a sight to behold.

Orchids, Orchids and More Orchids

We’re torn as to which ravishing runway we like best…   Which do you prefer – container gardens or wallflowers?

Spring Fashion… the Highs and Lows

Coveting This Closet!

It’s spring again and what better time to clean out those closets… a feat that always has its highs and lows (as in, that pair of color jeans bought last year are still in style (a high!) but you’ll have to lose that winter weight before you can zip them up again (a definite low!))  We always schedule a trip to the mall once we’re done and this year’s fabulous floral fashions are sure to make us smile (a high!) until we see the prices (a low!)  Thankfully, we’ve done our homework and uncovered some fashionable finds that won’t break the bank…

Floral Fashion… Then and Now

Inspired by Warhol

When Lynn from Decor Arts Now asked us to participate in her post about cultivating our personal style based the memory of our first room (a question prompted by Carlton Varney at the What’s New, What’s Next event at the NYDC last week), we couldn’t help but think back to the outfits our mother wore when in that room…

Diane von Furstenberg

One of our favorite dresses (which she still owns) is a Pucci floral shift that dates back to the early 1970’s.

Needless to say, we’re happy to see that pop art flowers are back in style for Spring 2012!

Mary Katrantzou Delightful Details

Mary Katrantzou's Delightful Details

One of the cool things about having friends in the fashion industry (besides the free handbags which we get on occasion!) is learning about trends six months before the shows.  And since our flowers are “couture for the home”, we always take into account what designers are buzzing about before we put a collection together.  So while fall isn’t even on our doorstep, we’re looking at what spring 2012 has in store for us (at least according to Accessories magazine.)

Sweet Tart: the fresh face of royalty (yes, we mean you, Kate!) brings a modern twist to classics, and sassy accessories in candy-colored hues add a certain eccentric vibe to the mix.

Prairie Dust: a nature-lover with a Bohemian flair, this free-spirited galwears airy cottons and floral print chiffons and pairs them with hammered silver and stones from the earth.

Classic Ease: an easy, breezy California style embodies this all-American girl next door and while she dresses with a certain minimalism (she likes to borrow from the boys!), she adds feminine touches like a gorgeous floral cuff.

Tropical Traveler: this globe-trotter is attracted to tropical flora and fauna and isn’t afraid to wear splashes of color, especially citrus hues.  Rio, here we come!

Disco Diva: pull out your glitter, sequins and rhinestones and strut your stuff on the dance floor – this fun-loving star loves to attract attention with her bright and bold accessories and makes a statement wherever she goes.

… to Philip Treacy for designing the most creative haute couture hats that walked down the runway last week.  These whimsical wonders inspired by origami swirls and ikebana flower arrangements struck the perfect balance to Giorgio Armani’s “Hommage au Japon” sleek silk and velvet styles.  We say “hats off” to both designers for a simply stunning collection!

Miu Miu's Fall 2010 Campaign

With a long weekend at the beach, we finally had the time to read Vogue (yes, the September Issue!), Harper’s Bazaar and Elle cover-to-cover and we now know how to add a little fabulousness to our fall wardrobe.  Though we love all the classic camel coats, feminine kitten heels and animal print accessories, it’s Miu Miu‘s Fall 2010 collection that might just get us shopping on Fashion’s Night Out.

Happy Birthday, Christian Dior!

Christian Dior by Marie-France Pochna

Christian Dior by Marie-France Pochna

Christian Dior, one of our favorite fashion designers, is quoted as saying “I have designed flower women” when he launched Corolle (the French word for the botanical term corolla or circlet of flower petals), his first collection in 1947.  This collection ushered in the New Look, the most famous single season in fashion history.  Gone were the conservative styles of the war period with Dior’s decadent use of corsets and swaths of material reminiscent of the “Belle Epoque”.

Born 105 years ago today, Dior was known for his feminine silhouettes, voluminous skirts and rich floral fabrics.  Though he died young, Dior’s legacy lives on in the brilliant designers who have succeeded him at the helm of his eponymous fashion house, including Yves St. Laurent, Gianfranco Ferre and John Galliano.
