Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice…

Two weeks and counting before Thanksgiving is upon us and we get to savor the most delicious pumpkin chiffon pies (alas, the recipe’s an ancient family secret that we’re not allowed to share!)  But there is one recipe that we heard of on the radio that had us salivating and almost driving off the road…  Pumpkin Stuffed with Everything Good, one of Dorie Greenspan’s favorite dishes in her new cookbook, Around My French Table.

The recipe came by way of a French friend’s sister who lives in Lyon.  As the story goes, this sister’s husband grows pumpkins on his farm and when the pumpkins are very small, she goes out into the fields with her children and they carve their name in the pumpkins.  When the pumpkins grow, their names grow, too, so that they each have their own pumpkin to make this dish.

Caution: the recipe above includes butter, bacon, heavy cream and Gruyere cheese so for those of you who (like us!) are watching what you eat before the big day comes, you might prefer these (lower fat!) pumpkin pretties.

    Did you know that pumpkin is good for your skin? I recently read that all the autumnal veggies were eaten for adding moisture – prior to winter. There always is some sort of fascinating historical reference to cuisine, “avec” the calories.

    yum!!! Had my 5th Pumpkin spice Starbucks of the season yesterday…and now after reading this I want my 6th….and what on earth is Pumpkin chiffon?! It sounds so decadent!

    OMG–so decadent and so delicious. Would love to try a variation on this for the big day. Also, the savory macaroons look yummy too–perfect for a light dessert!

    That stuffed pumpkin looks absolutely amazing!! Yum! Pumpkin flavors and scents are quite possibly my favorite thing about the fall, have been burning pumpkin candles nearly every day.

    Pumpkin has become an acquired taste of mine! And, it never looked so good. Adore the story about your friend carving her name and her children’s into “their” pumpkins. Now, THAT is a family tradition I could get excited about. That….and your secret family recipe! 🙂

    I used to shy away from pumpkin, but it’s so on my radar these days. I just went to a little event at a boutique in town on Fri night and it was catered by a lovely lady who could seriously have her own cooking show. She had the most wonderful whipped pumpkin dessert, I wanted to lick my plate so bad!! This post looks just as wonderful 🙂
