Happy Poppy Birthday

At the age of twelve, we moved to the US from Belgium and one of the things our mother promised (besides a new wardrobe to replace the uniforms we wore at the Catholic school we attended for 6 years!) was a bedroom we could decorate ourselves so what did we choose as the predominant pattern?  Marimekko’s iconic bright and colorful poppy print, Unikko, of course!  Guess we’ve always been flower girls at heart…

Needless to say, we’re thrilled that Unikko, created by designer Maija Isola, is turning 50 this year.  As the story goes, the founder of Marimekko, Armi Ratia, vowed she would never print a flower pattern until she saw Unikko and fell in love with it’s 60’s flower power spirit.

For five decades, Unikko has appeared on clothing, linens, housewares and even decorated a Finnair plane and to celebrate the anniversary, Marimekko has created a new collection dressed in this “field of abstract poppies.”

Love this cheerful modern classic! I had a dress in this pattern years ago when Marimekko was in the iconic DR store on 57th Street. What a happy way to start the day!

I have the cutest picture in my head of you two at six surrounded by pretty poppies. Such a fun, happy pattern. Love Marimekko – that umbrella would keep me cheerful on a rainy day! XO

This takes me back to my college days when everyone wanted their dorm room decorated in Marimekko (does that date me or what?). So cheery and bright! Have a beautiful day, ladies! xoxo
