According to several shelter magazines, burl is back and in a more modern way. Wikipedia describes a burl as an outgrowth on a tree that disfigures it and it’s true, trees with burls aren’t that pretty. But what’s interesting is that burl wood is prized for its beauty and rarity, and sought after by artists and furniture makers.
A hallmark the Biedermeier period, burl wood veneers made a comeback in the Art Deco movement and their retro look is still in fashion today. The only difference is that the wood is brighter and lighter, and not as glossy.
