What the heck is hygge? No, it’s not a Will Smith song or the name of one of Lisa Vanderpump’s many Pomeranians… Pronounced (hoo-guh), hygge is the Danish quality of living a cozy, comfortable and convivial life, especially throughout the winter months. It’s no wonder Denmark is one of the happiest countries in the world since embracing hygge leads to feelings of deeper contentment and a more joyful outlook. If you’ve watched Caroline Fleming on Bravo’s Ladies of London, you’ll understand the concept. One of our New Year’s resolutions is to add hygge to our lives so here are some ways we’re doing just that:
Make cocoa from scratch and add marshmallows – the more, the yummier.
Light candles in every room of the house.
Decorate with nature… That’s an easy one and our plants don’t die!
Read books, preferably curled up on a couch in front of the fire with a cozy throw.
Spend time outdoors – yes, even in the winter! We bundle up with hats, scarves and gloves and go for walks with the dogs. That way we can burn off the homemade hot cocoa and earn some downtime in front of the fire. So what do you think… to hygge or not to hygge?
