Family Trees

“Pine Man” – 2006

Whenever we suggest to the boys that we hop in the car and look at fall foliage, they roll their eyes and run for their rooms.  Perhaps they’d be open to visiting trees of a different kind…

“Smoke Jumper” – 2007

Joseph Wheelwright’s transformed trees are a sight to see and fortunately for us, his exhibit at our local Katonah Museum of Art has been extended through Spring 2013 given its popularity.  Five looming figures ranging from 17 to 27 feet tall look as if they grew out of the ground to keep the spruces company.

“Oracle” – 2008

“Yellow Birch” – 2009

With their expressive faces and lanky limbs, we can tell the boys that these larger-than-life sculptures are desendents of the Ent Treebeard, the oldest creature in Middle-Earth…

Treebeard

and a long lost family member of our own Pine Man, the tree with the face that resides upstate on their grandparents’ property.  But maybe we’re barking up the wrong tree?

These are so neat! I’m sure the boys were captivated! (In my case, I am grateful that my 15 year old will still gladly tag along on most of our little ventures. Not always, but enough to keep mom happy.)
