From Posy to Party

Diane James Home – Wine Country Bouquet

Now that Sandy has passed and the 9″ of snow has melted, we can finally turn our attention to the holidays and with Thanksgiving just a week away, it’s none too soon!  Given that this holiday really centers around food and therefore, the table, we like to go all out…  Thankfully, we’ve got the flowers covered and we’re thinking of a plum and silver theme to coordinate with our Wine Country Bouquet.

… to Serena & Lily for not only dressing our beds but now, our tables!  We adore the direction Serena and Lily are taking the company and totally agree that “great entertaining is about creating a world where everyone feels warm, welcome, at ease.”  Who wouldn’t want to gather around a beautiful table layered with linens, lots of candlelight and pretty platters?  “The best parties are usually anything but perfect.  It just has to be done with love.”

… to the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross for inviting us to be a Tabletop Designer for their annual Red & White Ball (sponsored by our fabulous friends at Cottages & Gardens no less!) which was held last Saturday.  This year’s theme, “Help is Here”, is a constant reminder of how much a role this invaluable organization plays in providing relief to victims of disasters – whether an earthquake in China, a tsunami in Japan or tornadoes in Tennessee.  We were honored to be part of this glamorous evening and had a ball designing our “picnic under the cherry tree!”

Book Report: Flair

A Flair for Entertaining

A Flair for Entertaining

“I grew up in rural Nebraska – literally in the middle of nowhere – yet my parents managed to carve out a pretty sophisticated lifestyle for themselves.  Each month, they hosted a black-tie dinner party, for which my mother cooked a beautiful meal – on her own, without any help.

The table was set with one of her many collections of china, silver, and freshly ironed linen tableclothes and napkins.  Nothing was showy – just elegant and comfortable.”

For all of us who aren’t like Mrs. Nye, Flair: Exquisite Invitations, Lush Flowers and Gorgeous Table Settings by her fabulously talented son, Joe, is a party thrower’s must-have.  Needless to say, with the holiday season just a few months away, our copy is becoming dog-eared.

Joe Nye - The Party Guy

Joe Nye - The Party Guy

Not only does Joe cover the important aspects of table settings, invitations, party favors and flowers, but he shares a few short-cuts (grocery store blooms – oh my!) and quick fixes (pre-printed invitations – gasp!) to create a memorable event.

Joe believes that as a host, it’s easy to forget that “thoughtful” and “lovely” aren’t the same as “perfect” – so get out your water pitchers for your bouquets and serve your soup out of coffee cups… but be careful never to equate casual with sloppy.

This book is a gem, a page-turner filled with beautiful pictures and practical suggestions and a wonderful source of inspiration for us all.  In our minds, Joe Nye is the Party Guy!

P.S.  He’s also the Interior Guy (just in case you didn’t know!)

Happy Thanksgiving!

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway –
Thanksgiving comes again!
