Gardens at First Light

Gardens at First Light

One of our favorite parts of the day is early morning when the sun is rising over the ridge, the peepers are still peeping in the pond across the street and all is calm.  On warmer days, you will find us outside on our terrace or porch with our cups of coffee enjoying the glow that is cast on our gardens at first light.  That is one of the reasons why we were so thrilled to be contacted by the lovely and celebrated photographer, Stacy Bass, to profile her new book, Gardens at First Light, on our blog and to offer it as a giveaway to one lucky reader!  We are such huge fans of Stacy’s (read about her in a post here) and her work is truly inspiring.

The second reason we were so excited is that the enchanting photographs are accompanied by text from well-known home and garden journalist Judy Ostrow, who not only is one of our neighbors but shares a birthday with us (we could be triplets!)  Stacy’s second book is filled with over 200 images that offer a rare and privileged glimpse into dozens of private gardens in the Northeast.  The only way you would be able to see these gardens at dawn is as guest of the homeowner!

Best of all, Gardens at First Light also contains an illustrated reference guide for the featured gardens should you wish to put your green thumbs to work.  Given our talent for killing live plants, we’ll settle with admiring the beauty of blooming rolling hills and the serene symmetry of box hedges instead.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Stacy will be signing books in Westport, CT next week on Thursday, May 7th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at White Birch Studio and will personalize a book for you or for your mom!  All you need to do to enter the giveaway is leave a comment below or email us at thebuzz.giveaway@gmail.com with “Gardens at First Light” in the subject line.  You have until 11:59 pm on Sunday, May 3rd, 2015 to enter and we’ll announce the winner on Monday, May 4th.

Personalities

Divine Design: Kerry Hanson

Colorful Kitchen

If you browse through Kerry Hanson’s online portfolio, you can’t help but be enchanted by her light touch and refreshing palette, then fall for her youthful yet elegant aesthetic.

Bright and Beautiful

We first discovered Kerry’s work in the pages of a local magazine – her own home was profiled in an article written by our next door neighbor, Judy Ostrow, and photographed by the super talented Stacy Bass.

Bedroom Blues

Pantry Perfection

We love Kerry’s bold patterns and tailored touches and the fact that each one of her rooms has personality.  From a bright and colorful kitchen to a more refined dining room that mixes the old with the new, Kerry’s interiors are warm and welcoming.  Perhaps that’s because she learned her craft in sunny California at U.C. Berkeley and with Edward Lobrano.

Dining Delight

With four girls of her own, Kerry knows how to decorate for a busy family and create cozy spaces for quiet downtime.  And who wouldn’t want to sleep like a princess in her charming girls’ rooms?

A Princess’ Pad

Now, if only we could channel some of Kerry’s talent and get our own decorating done!

Book Report, Inspirations

In The Garden (and Home) with Stacy Bass

Stacy Bass – Photographer Extraordinaire

While supposedly tending our booth at Rooms With A View last weekend, we sneaked out to meet the hugely talented photographer, Stacy Bass, and get our hands on her beautiful book, In The Garden.  The presentation opened with a gorgeous slideshow of Stacy’s work – both in the garden and in the home – immediately transporting us into the exquisite worlds she shoots.  She then shared some of her favorite tips on how best to capture a space.  Here are some highlights from her talk:

A Garden at Dawn

1.  Shoot gardens at dawn when the sun is rising and stop when it gets too bright.

A Well Tended Bar

2.  Accessories are important and better to have too many than not enough since you can always take something away when framing a shot.

Heavenly Hydrangeas in the Summer

3.  Think about the seasons and what your garden will look like through the windows.

Art in the Bedroom

4.  Invest in art – it’s so important to have something on the walls!

Flowers in the Kitchen

5.  And last but not least, flowers finish a room (just make sure the arrangements you use are of an appropriate scale.)

It was such a treat to meet Stacy and we know we’ll be inspired by her book for many seasons to come.  If you want to see more of her work, we encourage you to visit her site – but be warned, you might get lost in all the beauty!
