According to the myth, she devoured almost the entire fruit, leaving only six seeds, which forced Persephone to spend six months of the year in the underworld once she had been released.  The months she is away, her mother, Demeter, the goddess of harvest, grieves and the earth becomes barren and that’s why we have seasons (according to the Greeks, that is!)
