Sitting on the beautiful banks of the Navesink River in New Jersey, this renovated Arts and Crafts-style house is home sweet home to a family of four, though you wouldn’t know it from the calming palette of pale grays, taupes and blues. Designer Kati Curtis was given the task to make the original dark interiors filled with architectural details and quirky spaces (like two octagonal shaped rooms) into a light and airy home.
Given that two young children live here, the furniture and counter tops had to be durable and easy to clean. With that in mind, Kati chose stain-resistant outdoor fabrics for the family room seating and a stone-topped table in the dining room on which the children can color and not leave a trace.
The patterned Donegal wool rugs that are found throughout the home are not only beautiful but practical since they hide dirt and stains. There’s even a playroom in the attic replete with beanbag chairs and a vibrant patchwork carpet, a perfect space for play dates and fun.
No riverfront house is complete without a boathouse and this one converts into a guest room or an entertaining space depending on the needs. Who wouldn’t want to spend the weekend with friends hanging by the water and enjoying the views?!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend just hanging…

When Luxe Magazine called to ask if Diane would be willing to offer up some of her “local gems” for their Insider’s Guide, we jumped at the opportunity. After all, living and working in Connecticut for over thirty years has allowed us to fill our address book with fun finds. Here are some of our favorite spots if you happen to be in our neck of the woods!
“Go-to” Design Store – Pimlico in New Canaan for its delightful atmosphere where vintage meets modern and the traditional is tempered by the unexpected.
“Must-see” Fall Event – Rooms with a View, founded by dear friend Albert Hadley, where twelve designers transform the Southport Congregational Church into stylish vignettes. This year’s theme is “The Next Generation” showcasing new local talent – how fun!
“Shop-til-you-drop” Fashion – if you’re looking for the latest styles from Milly, Rebecca Taylor and DVF, Togs in Greenwich will satisfy your urge to splurge.
Meals “To Go” – you haven’t had take-out until you’ve tried Nicholas Roberts‘s Naked Portabella Club with roasted red pepper, arugula and goat cheese or the Crawfish Beignet Wrap with Cajun aiolo… so yummy, you’ll never order from a deli again.
Hope your weekend is filled with fabulous finds like these!
P.S. We’re celebrating our third year online at Diane James Home and giving you all a gift of 20% off your entire order. Just use coupon code 2011bday at checkout – valid through October 24th!

What’s Next? According to designer Windsor Smith, it’s the launch of her new outdoor fabric line with Kravet. We had the chance to hear Windsor being interviewed by Pamela Jaccarino, Editor in Chief of LUXE Magazine, on Tuesday and see her new collection for ourselves. Many of the designs are based on Windsor’s most popular indoor fabrics and have been tested to last the test of time (40,000 “rubs”!)
As we sat there nodding and smiling at what Windsor had to say, we jotted down a few memorable quotes such as “furniture should be like a member of your family; even the precious needs to be approachable.”
“A designer should be part therapist, part shaman, and very funny (you have to be to slide those bills through!)… and above all, a facilitator of great experiences.”
“In designing a house, you should look at how you live today and how you can support that lifestyle with beautiful things.”
When asked which room she’d do away with, this self-described “lifestyle architect” immediately answered “the formal living room.” She turned hers into a place where her teenage boys can hang, replete with comfy couches and a ping pong table.
While we’re not ready to be so bold, we’re definitely thinking of tapping Windsor’s style and having her design some rooms. With her Room in a Box website, that just may be possible!
