Winter Tablesetting

Winter Tablesetting

We’ve made it to the end of January and spring is only 47 days away (yeah!)  Still, it’s hard not to let the constant cold and lack of daytime hours get us down so why not make the most of it – set a pretty table and invite your friends over for a cozy dinner.  A delicious winter stew and a glass bottle of good red wine will go a long way to chase away our winter blues…

Mums the Word!

Mum’s the Word!

It wouldn’t be October without mentioning Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Garden opening tomorrow at The New York Botanical Garden.  It’s one of our favorite exhibits and it really showcases the chrysanthemum in a whole new light.

Growing up in Europe, mums were somewhat shunned in our house since they’re symbolic of death (i.e. they’re often used at funerals and to decorate graves) so we never really got to appreciate their ephemeral beauty.

Chrysanthemums have quite the opposite reputation in Japan where they’re celebrated during The Festival of Happiness (National Chrysanthemum Day), one of five ancient festival days in that country.

Q & A

Q & A with Kim Seybert

When it comes to entertaining, a table isn’t properly dressed unless it is wearing Kim Seybert’s often fanciful, always fashionable accessories.  Kim’s background in fashion and love of rich color and texture are evident in the intricate patterns and jeweled touches that make her creations so unique.

With the holidays just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to subject one of our favorite tabletop designers (and a very good friend!) to our Q & A.

1.   What did you want to be when you were a child?
I always wanted to be a Fashion Designer.

2.   What is your necessary luxury?
A relaxing lavender bubble bath before I go to bed.

3.   What is your favorite decorating accessory?
Diane James flowers, of course!

4.   Where do you window shop?
At the Tibet market in New Delhi.  I am always inspired when I spend time there.

5.   What makes a house a home?
Pets and children.

6.   What is the most enjoyable part of your day?
A yoga class whenever I can fit it into my day… morning, lunchtime or after work.

7.   What is your favorite flower?
Peonies.  Best colors…  sunset, coral or plum.

8.   If you were a cocktail, what would you be?
A brandy milk punch.  They remind me of a sultry Sunday brunch in New Orleans.

9.   If your life were made into a movie, what would be the title and who would play your part?
“To Kill a Mockingbird” and I would be Scout.

10.  Name one thing from your “Bucket List”.
I would visit the houseboats in Kashmir.

As Kim loves to say, “Life is a banquet” and we so agree!  To see Kim’s tabletop collections and shop online, please visit her website, KimSeybert.com.

Mmmm… Mushrooms!

With a heat wave hitting the New York area this week (and fall a month away!), we stayed cool visiting the home floor at Barneys and taking in a matinee of Julie & Julia.

We fell in love with this woodland vignette, a farm house table set with Anna Weatherley “Forest Mushrooms” plates, Michael Aram “Twigware”, Kim Seybert bubble glasses and place mats and wonderful art glass mushrooms.

Inspired by this table setting and Julia Child, we thought it would be fun to add one of our favorite mushroom recipes, Champignons Sautes au Beurre, from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  Perfect on grilled chicken and steak, or as a vegetable side, sauteed mushrooms are perfect year-round…
