Modern Mexico

With another arctic vortex in our neighborhood, keeping warm these days is a challenge and it’s taking every ounce of our willpower not to repack our bags and head back down to Mexico for a while.  While we love New England in the spring, summer and fall, the winter does have us yearning for more tropical climes…  And an article on Domaine yesterday about the rise of of Mexican Modernism really didn’t help our mood!

So today, instead of shedding sweaters for swimwear, we’ll just bask in the glow of these beautiful interiors which capture the eclectic cool of Los Cabos, the artisanal allure of Acapulco and the terrific textures of Tulum.

Alejandra Redo

Popular with top interior designers and architects like Kara Mann, John Houshmand and Alejandra Redo and with celebrities (who could forget the double spread on Cindy Crawford and George Clooney’s Baja homes in AD last year!), Mexican Modernism, with its mix of old world shapes and exotic materials seems at home anywhere in the world.

Even Jorge Almada and Anne-Marie Midy (the founders of the fabulous Mexican design firm Casamidy where, by the way, you can get some of these Mexican made marvels) were able to transport their laid back and colorful style to dreary, rainy Belgium – a place where a little modern Mexico goes a long way (we know…  we lived there for 12 years and summer lasted a day!)

We hope this post brought a little sunshine your way!  What are you doing to stay warm and cozy this weekend?

Meeting Mario

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013
Our First Press!

Our First Press!

The day we met Mario Buatta, he arrived at our mother’s apartment for a photo shoot with Architectural Digest complaining of indigestion.  Mother, concerned for his well being, quickly offered some Tums or Alka Seltzer which he declined. Mario then proceeded to shut himself in her tiny bathroom for quite some time, alarming our mother even more.  When he finally emerged, he took a seat on her couch and proceeded to pass gas during the entire interview.  Needless to say, our mother (who is a lady and has only raised daughters) was speechless…  until Mario stood up and removed a whoopee cushion!

Everyone who knows Mario knows he’s a prankster, that he loves bad puns and will have you laughing on the floor if he had his way.  While he’s New York born and bred, his glamorous interiors span the globe and still, he remains down to earth even after being so much in the public eye.  We’ve been fortunate to work with him on several projects, including a Regency-style library which he did for the Kips Bay Showhouse in 2006.

His fifty year career is now being celebrated in a new book to be released next Tuesday by Rizzoli.  With 432 pages of beautiful design, this tome is destined to be a classic and not the least bit “chintzy” (pardon the bad pun!)

A-Listers

Thursday, September 12 at The Palace

Now that the boys are back in school and our schedules are back to somewhat normal, we can’t wait to get out and mingle this fall.  First on our list of parties is the athome in Fairfield County 2013 A-List Awards honoring the top projects in design, landscape and architecture by firms in our own backyard.  This is our first time attending the event and we’re excited to see how some of our favorite local designers (and clients!) fair…

Black and White Beauty (Photo by Jane Beiles)

Susan Glick and Tiffany Eastman from Westport are up for two awards – Entryways and Bath…

Elegant Simplicity (photo by Jane Beiles)

and will have to compete with Greenwich’s own Cindy Rinfret of Rinfret Ltd. in the Entryways category.

Blue Hues

We’ll also be cheering on New Canaan designer Michelle Morgan Harrison who submitted a beautiful living room (shot by oh-so talented Jane Beiles) for consideration in the Living Spaces category…

Serene Living

and crossing our fingers for Kathy Hodge of Sage Design.

Picture Perfect

With so many fabulous projects to choose from, we don’t know how the star-studded panel of judges (including Jennifer Post, Katie Ridder, Vincente Wolf, Thom Felicia, and charismatic host Eric Cohler) ever came to a decision.  Regardless of who wins, we know it will be an evening of divine design!

If you want to join us, click here for more information and tickets.  We hope to see you there!

Divine Design: Kerry Hanson

Colorful Kitchen

If you browse through Kerry Hanson’s online portfolio, you can’t help but be enchanted by her light touch and refreshing palette, then fall for her youthful yet elegant aesthetic.

Bright and Beautiful

We first discovered Kerry’s work in the pages of a local magazine - her own home was profiled in an article written by our next door neighbor, Judy Ostrow, and photographed by the super talented Stacy Bass.

Bedroom Blues

Pantry Perfection

We love Kerry’s bold patterns and tailored touches and the fact that each one of her rooms has personality.  From a bright and colorful kitchen to a more refined dining room that mixes the old with the new, Kerry’s interiors are warm and welcoming.  Perhaps that’s because she learned her craft in sunny California at U.C. Berkeley and with Edward Lobrano.

Dining Delight

With four girls of her own, Kerry knows how to decorate for a busy family and create cozy spaces for quiet downtime.  And who wouldn’t want to sleep like a princess in her charming girls’ rooms?

A Princess’ Pad

Now, if only we could channel some of Kerry’s talent and get our own decorating done!

Spring Tablescape à la Eddie Ross

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…  and party plannin’ is underway.  On any given Saturday, you’ll find us cooking out with friends on the terrace or packing a picnic for the beach.  While we’re more of the low-key, come as you are types, sometimes it’s nice to plan a more extravagant affair and that’s where the girls from J+G Design come in.

Georgie and Jennifer Style a Table

Jennifer Beek and Georgie Hambright are the beauties and the brains behind this new interior design and event planning firm based in New York.  We met Jennifer when she worked with our adorable friend, Harry Heissmann, and discovered her new venture when we saw our Green and Groovy Bouquet on their blog, The Curatorial (love it when that happens!)

Eclectic and Layered

Not only does this dynamic duo design sleek and elegant interiors, they also create unique events (they see these as “temporary” interiors.)  With services including picking a theme and color scheme, planning a menu, creating a signature drink, arranging flowers and setting a terrific table, who could go wrong?

Winter Blues

And they’re even willing to share a tip or two…  See how they mixed in vintage linens, china and glassware for an eclectic and layered look in their client’s industrial loft…

Rustic Chic

or how they used Christmas ornaments as place card holders and mercury glass balls instead of candles to reflect light in a rustic winter tablescape.

Whimsical Birthday

We know we’ll be visiting their Pinterest boards to be inspired for our next party.  Now if only we could only get the construction finished!
