PUT A RING ON IT!

Deck the Halls!

Deck the Halls!

One of the best parts about going away for Thanksgiving is not having to do loads of laundry over the weekend and spending that time reading magazines – which is exactly what we did on Friday morning.  The weather was surprisingly warm and sunny so we brought our coffee out to the porch and indulged in back issues of House Beautiful, Traditional Home and the like.

Needless to say, we took our time leafing through the pages and were thoroughly inspired by all the holiday decor.  So much so that we’re tackling a DYI project this year which will have us visiting a Michaels store soon to invest in some reindeer moss and glue.  Given that we’re not all that crafty, we may or may not share the results… (wink, wink!)

In the meantime, every home needs a wreath (and every finger needs a ring!) so we’ve rounded up some of our favorite DYI projects straight from the pages of House & Home!  Let us know if you decide to tackle one of these – we’d love to see what you do.

Happy 2015!

We hope you all enjoyed a fun and festive week with family and friends.  One of the best parts of a family vacation away is the downtime we get from not having to run our homes or business… and the ability to curl up in front of the fireplace to read magazines in the middle of the afternoon while the boys are on the slopes!  The good news is, we’re all caught up on what was hot in 2014…  The bad news, it’s 2015 – so time to look into the future and see what will be on trend this year in home décor.  Fortunately, this month’s issue of House & Home has provided us some insight asking designers and tastemakers to weigh in.  One of the trends we’ll see is British Eclectic.  Interior designer Ben Pentreath likes “richly layered rooms.  Colour, pattern and a mix of old and new furniture create timeless and comfortable places to live.”  This look doesn’t take itself too seriously so add a whimsical piece of art like this collage of pressed flower petals to lighten up a traditional room.

As second trend we’ll see is Modern Farmhouse.  Architect Kelly Buffey points out, “We live in an age of haste.  These seemingly simple forms provide a visual and experiential reprieve.”  Reclaimed wood, natural textures, and modern shapes compliment spare architectural details for a look that is clean yet rustic in feel.  Our friend Frances Palmer’s hand thrown pottery would be the perfect touch for such a décor trend, and not only because she lives and works in a barn!

Lastly, décor always has a global view and this year, South American Fusion will be muy caliente.  A mix of artisanal finds, bold pops of color and Latin textiles brings this trend to life.  Another friend of ours, Schuyler Samperton, knows how to create a cheerful living room in a Beverly Hills home using these elements where according to fashion designer Heidi Merrick: “White walls and linens create a canvas for a bright flower or rug.  Your eye is drawn to the pop of color, transforming your space in one stroke.”  And speaking of strokes, how about this painterly rug by Kate Spade to temper dark woods and ironwork?

What other trends are you looking forward to in 2015?  Does keeping the holiday décor up until Valentine’s Day count as one?
