Fabulous Finds

Mother’s Day at Terrain

Terrific Terrariums

Imagine our surprise when our boys asked if we could spend Mother’s Day afternoon making a terrarium together…  Then we found out that they would get extra credit in science if they complete the assignment!

Tall Terrarium Plants

Regardless of why they want to get their hands dirty and plant little botanical beauties in a jar, we think it’s a great idea – especially since we get to drag them to Terrain for the afternoon!

And while we’re there, why not treat ourselves to some Mother’s Day gifts…

The Sprouted Kitchen

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,
But only one mother the wide world over.

Posy Palette: Dahlia

Flower Urn

Our good friend, artist Frances Palmer, grows the most amazing dahlias in her garden and her love for these delightful blossoms has garnered her a wonderful nickname – the “Dahlia Lama!”  While we’re a bit late with her advice on how to make dahlia bushes branch out and have more blooms (read it here for future reference), we’ve found some other dahlia-hued beauties to brighten your day!

Inspirations

Winter Whites

The lastest posts on one of our favorite blogs, {this is glamorous}, remind us of how much we love winter whites.  Gone are the days whenwearing white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas.  Winter whites are de rigueur, especially when coming from the fashion houses of Chanel, Armani and Versace.  In fact, white was Elie Saab’s only color for his Fall 2009 couture collection, as seen on the runway last July.

While in fashion, winter whites tend to be creamier than their crisp summer counterparts, some more beige and others, translucent, not so for home decor.  We think all whites work, adding the perfect snowy touch for the winter season.

Personalities

Frances Palmer in Japan

We love living vicariously through our friends when they lead such interesting lives and Frances Palmer is no exception.  She recently returned from a fabulous trip to Japan where she met with master craftsmen and wandered through enchanting temple gardens.  Among her favorite visits were the Katsura Imperial Villa built in 1645 in western Kyoto, Honen-in where famous scholars are buried and Tofuku-ji, a Buddhist temple with the oldest Zen gate in Japan.

Frances was also inspired by the many artists she visited including glassblower Naoya Arakawa at the Seikosha Glass Studio, the potter Naoto Ishi and textile designer and collector Kawasaki Kei-san of Gallery Kei who just had an exhibit of antique patchwork cloth bags used to bring rice or beans to temple ceremonies.

A Day at Neiman Marcus – Natick, MA

Last week we had the pleasure of making a personal appearance at Neiman Marcus in Natick, MA, where Diane met many of her loyal fans and showed them how to create lovely spring bouquets using fresh garden flowers.  We loved how the visual team used little vignettes to showcase our designs with some of our favorite home accessories like Frances Palmer and Jan Barboglio.

It was a delightful afternoon spent sipping champagne, nibbling flower-shaped sugar cookies and designing one-of-a-kind bouquets for happy clients.  What a treat!
