Flower Power

Delighting in Dahlias

@floretflower

And thus the soul – if fortune cast
Its love to live in scenes less bright, –
Should bloom amidst the adverse blast:  –
Nor suffer sorrow’s clouds to blight
Its outward beauty – inward light.

Thus should she live and flourish still,
Though misery’s frost might strive to kill
The germ of hope within her quite: –
Thus should she hold each beauty fast,
And bud and blossom to the last.

@francespalmer

We’re delighting in dahlias and are reminded of this Victorian poem praising this bloom’s ability to withstand all kinds of weather.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the recent hurricanes…  Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Delightful Dahlias

Delightful Dahlias

Delightful

Pronunciation: \di-ˈlīt-fəl\

Highly pleasing and charming…  We agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said, “No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden.”  May you delight in whatever occupies you this week!

Our good friend, artist Frances Palmer, grows the most amazing dahlias in her garden and her love for these delightful blossoms has garnered her a wonderful nickname – the “Dahlia Lama!”  While we’re a bit late with her advice on how to make dahlia bushes branch out and have more blooms (read it here for future reference), we’ve found some other dahlia-hued beauties to brighten your day!

The Latest Buzz

So Long, Southern Accents…

We just received our September/October  issue of Southern Accents and after spending some time perusing the beautiful interiors, added it to the growing pile of “final issues” along with our last House & Garden, Domino, Blueprint and Country Home.  With the closing of yet another shelter magazine, especially one that had a such unique voice and point of view, our printed monthly sources of inspiration are dwindling.

Thankfully, Time Inc. will continue Southern Accents online so we can still look forward to reading the Miss Gracious Living blog, browsing articles on architecture and design, and collecting ideas for table settings and entertaining.  For 32 years, Southern Accents brought us the best in southern lifestyle, homes and gardens so we hope to have 32 more…  In this last issue, don’t miss Amelia Handegan‘s gorgeous plantation-style house in Charleston and a delightful feature on dahlias!
