Up Route 7 just an hour or so north of us is White Flower Farm, a charming nursery that caters to the most ardent horticulturalists and even some “black thumbs”, too! The company was founded in 1950 by William Harris and Jane Grant, both writers from New York City, who fell in love with the outdoors and gardening when they bought their “little place in the country” twenty years prior.

The couple initially decided to sell only white flowered plants (hence the name), a unique concept yet not very appealing a broader gardening audience. With the zeal and natural curiosity of journalists, Harris and Grant plunged into the world of exclusive plants, becoming the upscale purveyors of rare plants such as the variegated Clivia – only 45 plants existed – which they offered for sale at $950 each.

The company was sold in 1976 to its current owner, Eliot Wadsworth, who continues the tradition of offering a beautiful range of flowers from around the world at, fortunately, affordable prices. We think planting White Flower Farm bulbs that will bloom throughout the year is a Necessary Luxury – don’t you?
