When it comes to Christmas this year, our families decided to forgo the traditional ritual of gift giving in order to raise a fund to help rebuild the town of Schoharie, NY, which was devastated by Hurricane Irene this summer. We have family members living there who have spent the last three months shoveling out muck from basements, ripping down walls of homes and businesses and providing what manual labor they can to get the town back on its feet.
Images from the flooding remind us how water can destroy but also give life so when the lovely Lauren from Aspiring Kennedy asked us (along with 24 other blogs) to join in her Well Done campaign for Charity: Water, we jumped at the occasion to help.
Founded by Scott Harrison, Charity: Water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Last year, bloggers worldwide donated $1,800 to finish a well – the goal this year is to raise $5,000 this month so that more wells can be dug and more clean water provided to villages in need.
We can’t think of a better time of year to offer a gift that will keep on giving…
