Friday Favorite: Hey.Luisa

Squirrel + Flowers

Dreamlike, thought-provoking, magical, wow…  These are some of the words that came to mind when we stumbled upon Luisa Azevedo‘s work on Instagram and we’ve been mesmerized ever since.  This young and talented teen (yes, she’s the same age as our older boys – 19!) has captured our hearts with her imaginary world of flora and fauna.  A native of Portugal, Luisa sets her subjects in the landscapes she loves most – the ocean and the hills of her country – and her photography allows us to escape, even for just a minute.  Luisa is currently studying at the University of Lisbon where she’s majoring in Multimedia Art and applying the Photoshop skills she learned through Youtube.  But enough words, how about some more images?

Market Loft at Bergdorf Goodman

Hand Tied Bouquet

We received a lot of Insta-love for this picture of a hand tied bouquet we created for Bergdorf Goodman last month so we thought you’d enjoy some pictures of the newly launched Market Loft on the 7th Floor.  With dappled light pouring through the tiered bamboo ceilings and eclectic carpets lining the path under foot, this space has taken a decidedly exotic feel.

Market Loft Stalls

Our Flowers

Mannequins in festive dresses carry armfuls of flowers while their Vespas are precariously piled high with baskets.  Shelves ladened with pottery by Amanda Moffat, ceramics by Astier de Villatte, vases by Elyse Graham and Mariage Freres teas sit under custom awnings.    Our hand tied bouquets spill out wooden buckets adding to the floor’s charm as street music swims in and around the stalls.

To Market, To Market

These pictures don’t do the floor justice so if you’re in New York, stop by Bergdorfs and travel to a faraway place, even for a couple of minutes.

Balancing Act

P.S.  Speaking of travel, we’re taking a little break to spend some time with the younger boys visiting colleges – in the States and abroad!  See you back here in 10 days.

Lofty Looks

Brooklyn Living

If we had to relive our young adult lives again, we would have bypassed New York’s Upper East Side and made a beeline to DUMBO (District Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a historic neighborhood of Brooklyn that has become one of the city’s premier arts districts and a center for what is cool and stylish.  But back then, it was definitely not what it is now.  Yes, there were struggling artists painting in converted lofts (one of our fathers-in law was one of them!)  but that was about it.  These days, the neighborhood is home to the likes of West Elm, Jacques Torres’ chocolate factory and warehouses turned into high-end condos.

Pearl Street Posy

The DUMBO

These Brooklyn lofts have a style of their own, one that moves away from the sleek minimal vibe of Manhattan and more toward the layered, lush looks of a life built for comfort and functionality.

Artful Alliums

Our new Lofty Looks collection for Spring/Summer 2017 is designed to elevate a space to the next level of texture and depth.  They are modern, yet approachable, with a distinct metropolitan feel.

Pink Lady

Crisp white flowers soften a geometric ceramic vase while maidenhair fern and orchid blossoms add a touch of whimsy to succulents planted in a concrete vessel. These style-forward designs will fuel your creativity and enhance your interiors, whether you’re an urban dweller or happily ensconced in the suburbs.

Sassy Grass

P.S.  We’re at the International Gift & Home Furnishings Show in Atlanta through Monday so please stop by and visit – High Design, Building 2, Floor 1, Booth #308.  Or visit Diane James Home in March to shop the new collection!

Floral Decor, The Latest Buzz

Untamed Nature

A Bloomsbury Interior

Often called the English avant-garde of their era, Bloomsbury artists and designers believed that fine art should inhabit everyday spaces and that the same attention to detail should be lavished on the design of simple decorative objects like pillows or lamps as had been bestowed on the design creation of a painting or sculpture.

The Bloomsbury Bouquet

Simple Gifts

Our new Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Untamed Nature, is inspired by this belief as well as by the free flowing forms and geometric patterns that were embraced by the movement.

Lilac Love

The Can Can

The Bloomsbury artists thrived on bright colors so we’ve paired vivid garden flowers like anemones, hydrangeas, peonies and lilacs with monochromatic ceramic and glass vases for bouquets that are a delight to the eye.

Bohemian Beauty

If you’re in Atlanta this week, please stop by and see these lovelies in person at the AmericasMart in High Design, Building 2, Floor 1, Booth #308!

Oh, Jackie!

Natalie as Jackie

Natalie as Jackie

Hollywood is abuzz this week about Natalie Portman’s portrayal of Jackie Kennedy in the new biopic hitting theaters in December.  The official trailer was released on Wednesday and it’s haunting atmosphere is goosebump worthy.  With rave reviews from critics who saw the movie at the Venice Film Festival last month, some are saying that Natalie’s performance is Oscar-worthy.

Like many of you, we have a special place in our hearts when it comes to Jackie.  Not only does our mother look like her (and we’re often reminded of this!) but one of us actually worked as Jackie’s intern one summer at Doubleday.  As a rising college sophomore, there wasn’t much to do at this famous publishing house except read a lot of manuscripts and proofread galleys.  And, of course, help Jackie with finalizing the plans for Caroline’s wedding which was held that July.

It was a summer to remember and Jackie was a wonderful, and glamorous, boss.  Her quick wit and incredible work ethic made assisting her a true pleasure, and she was adored by the authors she edited.  It’s no surprise she ended up first at Viking, then at Doubleday, given her passion for books and she published so many well regarded works during her 20 year career.

Needless to say, we can’t wait to see Natalie’s Jackie and compare her to the “real deal”!

Keeping Calm!

Yes!

Please forgive the lack of blog posts…  We’re spending the next ten days packing up our boys and dropping them off at college (whether they’re ready or not!)  In the words of Ann Landers, “It’s not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings.”  We just hope we’ve taught them enough…

Flower Power: Bastille

Pantone Colors of the Year

Pantone Colors of the Year

As we head into a season of celebrations (birthdays! graduations! weddings!), we thought you might like to meet Emily Pinon, founder and CEO of Bastille flowers & events, and perhaps be inspired by her bespoke, one-of-a-kind floral creations.  We came across Emily’s Instagram page and of course, spent the next several hours minutes admiring her work.  Whether it’s a corporate event where she hung hundreds of white calla lilies from the ceiling or a more intimate affair celebrating Pantone’s colors of the year (Rose Quartz and Serenity if you haven’t heard), Emily translates her clients desires into memories that last a lifetime.

Speaking of memories that last a lifetime, we’re taking a little break from blogging so that we can attend some races (both on the water and at the track), plan some spring sports banquets and graduation parties and focus on our high school seniors who will, all too soon, be off to college…  See you soon!

Coffee Table Essentials Challenge

Mid Century Coffee Table

Mid Century Coffee Table

What would we do without our coffee tables?  They are the centerpiece of any living or family room and play a vital role in our daily lives.  Our family room coffee table is devoid of any knick knacks given that it’s usually the place where teenage feet and multiple remote and gaming controls come to rest.  Our living room’s coffee table, though, is a pièce de résistance.  We love a well-styled coffee table so when we heard about Chairish‘s Coffee Table Essentials Challenge we knew we wanted to take part in the fun.  But styling a coffee table can be tricky.  Some people tend to over accessorize leaving absolutely no room for a wine glass, while others leave the space unadorned and decidedly uninteresting.  There are several things we keep in mind when we decorate our tables.  First, we like to use books.  New or vintage, the more colorful the better.  You can’t go wrong with coffee table books (and perhaps that’s why they’re called coffee table books!), especially if the cover or subject matter coordinates with your environment.

Second on our list is a natural element to soften the hard edges and add texture to flat surfaces.  Of course, arranging flowers right before guests arrive may not be how you want to spend your time so a potted plant, a bowl of succulents or a very lifelike faux design is good to have on hand in a pinch.

Pink Peonies in Marbled Vase

Third on our list of essentials is something fun.  We love games but we know that Monopoly takes up lots of room so we opt for something compact like a beautiful deck of cards or this elegant shagreen tic tac toe set.

Aerin Home - Shagreen Ric Tac Toe

Candles are a must to bring sparkle and life to a party.  We like the look of tapers in beautiful holders on a coffee table as they bring height and light to the space.

Skultuna - Lily Candle Holder

Last but not least, we love using decorative accents that we’ve collected on our trips or that have been passed down to us by our parents and grandparents.  We have a collection of vintage decanters and while we wouldn’t necessarily use them for our wine, we do like to display one or two.  They add interest to the setting and inevitably spark a conversation.

Mr. Doheny's Suite

Mr. Doheny’s Suite

In case you missed it on her Instagram feed and in our blog post Monday, the fabulous Nina Campbell is putting the finishing touches on Mr. Doheny’s suite at the Maison de Luxe Designer Show House and we’re thrilled that our plants are part of the decor!  Since the room has a more masculine feel, Nina chose succulents and orchids to complement the Leontine linens, Collier Webb sconces and Nina’s own patterns – Penglai on the blinds and chair and Khitan on the walls.

Sponsored by Luxe Interiors + Design, Maison de Luxe will transform the historic, 55-room Baronial-style Donehy residence, known as Greystone Mansion, which sits above the famed Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills.  More than twenty of the best known interior designers from across the States and abroad will infuse the 46,000-square-foot estate “with a fresh sense of style and enchantment while honoring its architecture and history,” according to Editor in Chief Pamela Jaccarino.

Along with Nina, this year’s participants include some of our favorite designers including Timothy Corrigan (another client of ours!), Benjamin Dhong, Mark D. Sikes, Sara Story and Summer Thornton.  We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us and judging by what the participants did in 2012, we won’t be disappointed.

The Designer Show House will be unveiled on November 5th and will be open to the public for a limited time.  Needless to say, we’re so jealous of those of you who live in the Los Angeles area and have a chance to see the rooms in person; most of us have to wait for Luxe’s January/February 2016 issue.
