Both editors chose two of the most influential female pop stars as models and bedecked their heads with an abundance of flowers, but while Rihanna’s fashion spread (styled by Edward Enninful) is more traditional in its style, Beyoncé’s shoot is decidedly romantic.

Beyoncé has appeared before on the cover of Vogue but this time she was given free reign over the issue and made history by choosing 23-year-old black photographer Tyler Mitchell. Set against the backdrop of an English country home, Mitchell’s images capture a soft, dreamy aesthetic that is a departure from the usual September vibe.
