Young Talent

Beleza

Our adventures in New York on Wednesday led to many encounters with wonderful designers, some established stars and others, rising stars.  Having been fans of Young Huh’s work ever since we saw it in the pages of Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, we were so excited to actually meet her in person at the TradHome party.

House Beautiful “Kitchen of the Month”

A local, award-winning, talent with (her Scarsdale, NY home where ”Marie Antoinette meets Jean Michel Frank” won her an Innovation in Design Award in 2011), Young’s style of mixing the old with the new allows her to infuse a fresh creative edge to her interiors.  And as a mother of three, Young understands the need to balance chic design with kid-friendly furnishings.

Young’s Home

A Serene Scene

Juggling both career and family life is no small feat for Young, especially since some of her projects take her to places beyond the tri-state area…  We don’t know how she does it all with such grace and humor and perhaps that’s why we connected so well with her!

Crisp and Clean

Whatever her secret is, Young is definitely shooting for the stars and we’ll be looking for more of her divine design…

Fabulous in Florida

Rumor has it Young is designing one of the 18 bedrooms for the Ronald McDonald House in Long Island with good friend Nick Olsen this fall…  Who’s up for a road trip?  Have a great weekend, everyone!

Diane James Home – Wine Country Bouquet

Now that Sandy has passed and the 9″ of snow has melted, we can finally turn our attention to the holidays and with Thanksgiving just a week away, it’s none too soon!  Given that this holiday really centers around food and therefore, the table, we like to go all out…  Thankfully, we’ve got the flowers covered and we’re thinking of a plum and silver theme to coordinate with our Wine Country Bouquet.

Loveramics – A Curious Toile

ABC Home – Mercury Glass Votive

Williams Sonoma – Place Card Holders

Kim Seybert – Silk Organza Napkin

Wisteria – Silvered Glass Gourds

What will inspire your Thanksgiving table this year?

P.S.  Need any ideas?  Join us at Nielsen’s tomorrow in Darien for a Home for the Holidays event, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  (all proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County.)

Doing The Delamar

Lovely Living

One of the winners (in two categories, no less!) at last night’s Innovation in Design Awards hosted by Connecticut Cottages & Gardens was our client, Sage Design.  Needless to say, we’re thrilled for Kathy since we’ve gotten to know her over the past couple of months and love her taste (read our post here.)

Succulent Seating

We’re even more excited to have visited Kathy’s website recently and found new images of the suites she designed for the Delamar Hotel in Southport.  Some of the pictures included the Diane James Home florals she borrowed for the photo shoot.  The Delamar liked what we did so much, the general manager bought two designs!

Bedside Beauty

Blue Hues

Being at the right place, at the right time may not be the most successful business strategy to follow but it has certainly worked for us and for Kathy.  In fact, she was asked to design the two suites at the Delamar when the owner, Charles Mallory, saw a model residence Kathy created for Southport Green.  Don’t you just love serendipity?!

Magic Carpet Ride

From Concept to Carpet

According to J.D. Staron, “It’s not just a rug, it’s a destination” and we took a trip to Maison et Objet last week, thanks to a wonderful presentation made by Jakub Staron at his Stamford, CT showroom (an event sponsored by Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, no less!)  With the help of pictures taken in Paris, as well as examples from his own collection of exquisite handmade rugs, Jakub walked us through some of the more popular trends in design.

Metallics and metals – look for burnished lusters and polished looks.

A Mix with Mylar

Natural motifs and materials – the love affair continues (and these beauties are made with recycled silk saris!)

Saturated with Saris

Bold grains and high-touch texture – the more nubbly, the better.

Bold and Bumpy

Blue and white – need we say more?

Beautiful Blue and White

Jakub travels the globe and translates the world into rugs, bringing us all on a magic carpet ride with his most innovative and inspirational patterns.  Each is truly a work of art – don’t you think?

Cocktails with the Governor

An Invitation to a Party

Last night, we had the honor of joining Governor and Mrs. Malloy for the private unveiling of The People’s Project, a.k.a. the renovation and refurbishment of the Governor’s residence in Hartford, Connecticut.  To celebrate the house’s 100th anniversary, a non-for-profit organization has been working to give it the ultimate birthday present in the form of some “cosmetic” surgery – not a major overhaul but some interior plumping and primping which was sorely needed.

Paula Perlini - Martha's Vineyard

Who best to gather a group of talented local designers to help with the subtle “touch-ups” but our friends at Connecticut Cottages & Gardens.

Catherine Cleare - Sasco Hill Bedroom

Sadly, we were told to leave our cameras at home since the entire November issue is dedicated to the project but we can tell you which designers finished their room with our flowers…  Paula Perlini, Sandra Morgan and Catherine Cleare!

Nirvana: Designer Showhouse Before

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011
At Home in Nirvana

At Home in Nirvana

Along with helping Celerie Kemble with flowers for her room for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, we’re busy designing our own space at the Designer Showhouse of Westchester in Bedford Corners, NY.  When Connecticut Cottages & Gardens asked us if we’d turn a basement “craft room” into something floral and fabulous, we immediately thought of a cutting room.

Nirvana from the Sky

Nirvana from the Sky

We could just imagine the owner of Nirvana (the $11 million 10,000 square foot home to be transformed by top local decorators) picking flowers in her garden and arranging them in her own private sanctuary.

Fortunately for us, the room is quite easy to work with since it has a black and white floor, white built-in counters and white walls.  We’ll be bringing in French flower buckets filled with stems, vases to line the shelves and counters and creating a display of our own bouquets for sale during the showhouse tour.

Fun Floral Buckets

We’ve even come up with a creative way to cover the flat screen TV (a black eyesore on one of the walls!)… with a large picture window overlooking a peony garden mounted on foam core!

The showhouse benefits Cerebral Palsy of Westchester and will be open to the public from May 8th through June 12th.  We do hope you’ll come and visit!

Simply Stylish Settings

Magnificent Magnolias

Magnificent Magnolias

While we don’t tend to think too much about our own holiday decorating until right after Thanksgiving (that’s because we’re so busy with everyone else’s floral needs!), we did get into the holiday spirit early this year with an event at Nielsen’s Florist in Darien sponsored by our great friends at Connecticut Cottages & Gardens.

The James Girls Ringing in The Holidays

Along with Simon Pearce and Home James!, we created beautiful tables in the greenhouse for every setting, from glamorous to garden, city to country…

Lovely Ladies from ABC

A great time was had by all, feasting on delicious tidbits and toasting with Nicolas Feuillate Brut Rose – and the beautifully styled Christmas trees added the perfect festive touch.  None of this would have been possible without the amazing staff at Nielsen’s and the support of wonderful friends – what a stylish way to start the holidays!
