Flower Urn

Our good friend, artist Frances Palmer, grows the most amazing dahlias in her garden and her love for these delightful blossoms has garnered her a wonderful nickname – the “Dahlia Lama!”  While we’re a bit late with her advice on how to make dahlia bushes branch out and have more blooms (read it here for future reference), we’ve found some other dahlia-hued beauties to brighten your day!

A French Fantasy

It all started with the Palace Collection by Seletti – a set of dishes that when stacked, create their own Renaissance era French palace.  Then we saw the tiered layers of this amazing tea pot at Anthropologie and began to see a trend…

Coffee or Tea?

Whether practical or whimsical, we think these bowls, cups and candlesticks “stack up” pretty well against their everyday counterparts – don’t you?

Anthropologie - Paean Flats

After a long weekend of cleaning out closets, we’re so ready for a day of shopping and wish we had a fairy godmother who could wave her magic wand and POUF!, the perfect fall fashions would fall from the sky to complement our basically black (and sometimes gray) wardrobe.

Tory Burch - Audra Dress

But all we have is each other, and while that’s a good thing most of the time since we’re brutally honest (“When are you ever going to wear that?!”), we tend to be a bit conservative when it comes to color.

Mary Katrantzou - Exotic Vines Cashmere Scarf

Bijoux Heart - Cristal de Corail Pedant

So this time, we’re vowing to add some of the beautiful jewel and spice tones we’ve been seeing in the pages of fashion magazines this fall and get out of our black (and sometimes gray) rut!

Tell us…  where do you shop for fall fashion and do you shop solo or with a friend?

Issue 08

Issue 08

… to the incredibly creative staff at Anthropologie for always coming up with catalogs that spark the imagination and tell a fashionable tale.  Issue 08 had us at “something about the city that night” so, of course, we read on: “the light through windows, the fall of rain, the quiet everywhere… made them see something in each other they had missed before.”  What a romantic way to showcase the new fall collection!

Bugs and Birds and Bees… Oh My!

Friday, October 29th, 2010

On a recent visit to Anthropologie we stumbled upon a table set with the most unique, and yes, some would say bizarre, collection of plates we’ve seen in ages.

The Natural World Collection

The Natural World Collection

We couldn’t decide if these vintage-like ceramics created by the quirky British designer, Lou Rota, were delightful or disturbing.  After all, some of her designs look like pieces from a picnic gone awry - green bugs and stag beetles share space with antique roses – while others are perfect for Halloween.

Reflecting her passion for nature and a deep-seated recycling ethic, Lou uses collage and decoupage and both handmade and vintage decals to transform people’s unloved cast-offs into highly desirable treasures.

Are you the type who loves Lou’s light-hearted, mix and match alternative to elegant sets of wedding china?  Would you use these plates at home?

Hello Mother, Hello Father…

Friday, June 4th, 2010

As we begin get out the trunks and pack our boys up for summer camp, we can’t help but be a bit jealous.  Who wouldn’t want to spend some time by a lake - waterskiing and horseback riding, doing craft projects and improvisational skits, singing songs by the campfire and making shadow puppets for nightly entertainment (the cabins have no electricity – yikes!)?  And while we’ll miss them a whole bunch, we know they’ll come back with smiles on their faces, loads of stories and dirty laundry and perhaps a friendship bracelet or two, some tie-dye t-shirts, and (dare we hope?) a macrame cozy or pan holder…

Guest Blogger Claire: Fashion on Top

Here’s another wonderful post from our intrepid 12-year-old fashionista!

In case you have not noticed, floral accessories are extremely “in” this year.  Notice that I did not use the word “season”.  That is because florals have been “in” for SEASONS!  They got lucky, you could say.  Everyone knew that the 70′s GoGo boots were never going to work forever.

I am going to focus this entry on FLORAL HAIR ACCESSORIES.  Personally, I think a woman or girl can never have enough of these.  These simple beauties can transform a boring, bland outfit into one that is unique and eye-catching.  Have nothing to wear? Just put on a black tee with a pair of dark wash jeans…add a flower accessory, and voila!  You have a fashion statement.  Don’t be shy!  You might think that you have a head that doesn’t please the headband; but, I will tell you that there is a flower for everyone.

So you see, there are many different flower choices, each as unique and special as the person who wears them.  Wearing floral hair accessories always make me feel confident, “fashion forward,” and “heads above the rest”.  (Which is funny since I am only 4’9″!!)

Have fun picking yours !!!!

Let’s Go Shopping… Anthropologie

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Besides frolicking in the yard with kids and dogs, snow days are meant to be spent catching up on the little things that fall by the wayside…  like cleaning out the front hall closet or pouring over the new spring catalogs that seem to be arriving by the dozen these days (the latter being infinitely more enjoyable than the former!)  One company that inspires us each and every season is Anthropologie and we hear the new London store is a must-see.

Anthropologie - Regent Street Store

The 11,000-square-foot Anthropologie on Regent Street opened its doors last October with much fanfare, kicking off what is intended to be a major European expansion for the company.  Known for its quirky and unusual designs, each store is unique since managers and buyers are encouraged to customize their wares to suit their customers’ local taste.

For the London store, James Bidwell, the managing director of Anthropologie Europe, has commissioned collections from UK designers like Patrice Jewelry and Clarke & Reilly, and combined them with one-of-a-kind antiques such as a 1900 Post Office table and an 1860′s easel, as well as an interesting array of South African accessories.

While we know we could spend an entire day browsing Anthropologie’s three floors brimming with goodies, it’s the store’s 1,500-square-foot living wall made up of 14,000 plants that we would love to see (naturally!)  In the meantime, we’ll just have to be inspired by the new spring catalog and the company’s European online site when it launches later this spring.

Let’s Get Cooking!

Friday, November 20th, 2009

This year, instead of buying gifts for those who help us every day (the mail carrier, the UPS driver, the Crystal Rock water guy and so many more), we’ve decided to bake a batch or two of Christmas cookies and wrap them in cellophane and tins topped off with pretty ribbon.  Before we get cooking, we plug in the iPod and don our favorite kitchen couture – there’s nothing like a pretty apron or cheerful oven mitt to turn us into Betty Crocker!
