On a recent visit to Anthropologie we stumbled upon a table set with the most unique, and yes, some would say bizarre, collection of plates we’ve seen in ages.
The Natural World Collection
We couldn’t decide if these vintage-like ceramics created by the quirky British designer, Lou Rota, were delightful or disturbing. After all, some of her designs look like pieces from a picnic gone awry - green bugs and stag beetles share space with antique roses – while others are perfect for Halloween.

Reflecting her passion for nature and a deep-seated recycling ethic, Lou uses collage and decoupage and both handmade and vintage decals to transform people’s unloved cast-offs into highly desirable treasures.

Wonderful. My Aunt Mary had the most incredible fish plates hanging in her kitchen breakfast nook. They remind me of these. I love that they are one part sweet and the other a little evil.

Quintessence and E + J – I prefer the Natural World and the monogram collections, as well… something a little strange about having food and bugs on the same plate!
These are fantastic….but the beetles might freak me out a bit in person!
The hummingbird is rather sweet, but I wouldn’t want to finish a plate of food and find the bugs staring back at me.

I love Lou Rota’s work; it reminds me of an idyllic English summer’s day (sadly over for another year). A big garden party full of strawberry’s, cakes, tea and pretty bugs crawling over the discarded plates!
