Melanie Boulch in The Atlantan
Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Melanie Boulch of Audace Et Insolite at our favorite new bistro in Atlanta (read all about our trip here.) Not only is she a native Parisian tastemaker (and so very chic!), she also distributes Rocio, the most fabulous line of handbags and clutches.

Paris Bag

Collette Chic Bag
Made entirely from sustainable acacia softwood and natural materials, Rocio bags are the perfect accessory for glamorous girls who are looking for eco-luxury without sacrificing style. And with names like Audrey, Coco, Collette and Paloma, they know they’ll be in good fashionable company!

Ladybug Bags - Classic, Small and Clutch
Designer Rocio Olbes launched her company in London in 2006 and the collection is now sold in over 35 countries at some of the world’s most exclusive stores including Henri Bendel, Harvey Nichols and Isetan.

Paloma Clutch
We know what we want for Christmas - to turn heads in the street and stop people in their tracks with a Rocio work of art! Wouldn’t you?

We’re back from the Atlanta Gift Show with lots of wonderful stems and vases for our new Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Even in this challenging economy, designers are still introducing new product and we’re happy to say that the showrooms were busy.

HomArt - An Array of Allium
One of our perennial favorite sources of inspiration is HomArt- not only because Dave Thomas, one of the owners, strolls the streets of the Marais in Paris for the latest and greatest in home decor trends, but also because the showroom never fails to please the senses.

HomArt - Bring on The Dirt
We especially loved this season’s garden theme with metal wind charms, wall vases and hanging terrariums.

HomArt - Glorious Garden

HomArt - Wall Spheres
Another great place to find a colorful mix of unique gifts and accessories is Diana White and Associates. For over 32 years, Diana has hand-picked products that exemplify both style and originality and displays them in a charming fashion.

Finally, a trip to the Atlanta show without a visit to La Maisonette for that certain “je ne sais quoi” would truly be a waste. Jean and Portia Marque’s lively French Jacquards, custom-designed lamps and hand-made Louis XVI style furniture are beautifully presented in a boutique-like setting.

La Maisonette - Jacquards, Lamps and Furniture
After a full day of shopping, we stopped by what has become our favorite little “resto – cafe – bar a vins” down the street from the Mart for the most delicious French fare and a chilled bottle of Jean-Luc Colombo Cotes de Provence. We were so excited when we found out that the Bastille Day menu included cuisses de grenouilles, feuillete d’escargots and moules et frites that we came back the next day – what better way to celebrate French independence than with “liberte, fraternite andbeaucoup de rose!”

Chicken Liver Toast -Yum!

Tarte Tatin with Rosemary Ice Cream - Double Yum!
We’ve been sworn to secrecy by many of our vendors not to divulge the name of this cozy neighborhood bistro (after all, they have to spend a week selling their wares in crowded showrooms and deserve a quiet dinner!) but if you email us and plead, we might let you know how to find it!

As John Wanamaker (the founder of the eponymous retail store Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia) famously said: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is, I don’t know which half!”

First Ever Diane James Home Ad!
After years of growing our business by word-of-mouth and a lot of free press, we have been given the opportunity to advertise with one of our favorite shelter magazines, Hamptons Cottages & Gardens. So here’s a sneak peak of the first ever Diane James Home ad – we’d love to hear what you think!

Earlier this year, our buyer at Neiman Marcus surprised us with the news that he was quitting his high profile position in the most luxurious of stores to pursue a lifelong passion – to walk the Appalachian Trail, all 2,175 miles from beginning to end. While his childhood dream had him hiking around the world, he decided to stay closer to home for his first foray into the woods.

The Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire
And so in late February, he began the long trek from Georgia to Maine with his wife (a self-described “hermit” with a charming twinkle in her eye, a beautiful smile and a gift for telling the most hysterical stories) and a forty-pound pack.

View of the Shenandoah Valley
Needless to say, we are in awe of this couple and were so excited to hear that they were in our neck of the woods (so to speak!) last week and needing a break (as well as a long, hot shower and a comfortable bed.) Even after the shower, we hardly recognized, our former buyer, Sweetooth (all hikers go by an alias on the trail) – gone were the European suits and stylish haircut, only to be replaced by Tom Hanks in Cast Away (scraggly beard and all) minus Wilson, the soccer ball.

Sweet Tooth and Bugsy
Over organic chicken with mango salsa, wheatberry and edamame salad and grilled summer vegetables, Sweet Tooth and Bugsy shared stories from the trail and lessons they’ve learned along the way. Here are just a few:

The View at Round Bald, Tennessee
After an evening of fun and laughter and a good night’s sleep, our friends were on their way, heading north for the last 705 miles. We joined them for part of the walk (a whole hour’s worth!) and had a chance to meet other hikers along the way – all of them looking like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, too! We appreciated the natural beauty of the trail (cutting through farmland, over a stream and into the woods) and marveled at the peace that can be found by simply turning off our cell phones and placing one foot after another…

The Rare Gray's Lily on Roan Mountain
Our intrepid friends have been taking pictures along the way (lots of flowers, we’re told!) and so we hope to post more images later this summer once they’ve had a chance to catch their breath. That is, after they’ve run a 200 mile relay race with friends and family in Oregon. A big thank you to Sweet Tooth and Bugsy for sharing in your great adventure!
