Q & A with Frances Palmer

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Who did The New York Times turn to for advice on shopping for pitchers last month?  Frances Palmer, of course!  We met Frances last year as she was getting ready to show in Atlanta and wanted to have realistic flowers grace her beautiful pottery.  Having read so much about this Weston, Connecticut based artist over the years (she really is a darling of the press!), we were honored and thrilled to help.

Frances’ passion is to create one-of-a-kind, irreverently shaped white tableware and accessories (her words, not ours!) and all of her pieces are beautiful yet functional.

Along with her high-end, hand-thrown designs, Frances also launched a collection that is manufactured in upstate New York.  Each of the pieces in the Pearl Collection is pressed from molds taken from her hand thrown samples so each retains the whimsical irregularities that is her signature.

Summertime Blues

Monday, July 27th, 2009

It seems that everywhere we turn this summer, we see blue – from the covers of home decor magazines, to the new collections presented at the Atlanta Gift Show and the nautical-themed fashions on the street.

Is the current economy inspiring these blues or does relaxed summer living under sunny skies by the ocean, lake or pool draw us to this favorite color?

Blue is calming yet refreshing, and with so many shades from peacock to periwinkle, this color is a perfect complement to white, green and brown.  Chase away the summer blues with these wonderful accents!

Summer Party Plates!

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

If you spend as much time entertaining at the beach or on the terrace as we do, you come to love your melamine!  From plates and bowls, to cups and trays, melamine tableware has graced many a summer party since the late 1950′s and 1960′s.

Made popular by the stylish modern designs of A. H. Woodfull for British Imperial Plastics, melamine has evolved into fashionable dinnerware for the outdoors.  Here are some of our favorite patterns…

Wonderful Water Lilies

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

If you have ever seen Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny, you can’t help but fall in love with the Japanese water garden and its water lilies which bloom all summer long.  Artists of every type are inspired by these beautiful blooms – from Monet, the founder of Impressionism, to the more contemporary glass blower Dale Chihuly and architect Vincent Callebaut (his futuristic floating cities are amazing!)  We were inspired by the July birth flower, the lovely water lily, and we hope you are, too…

Blooming Flowers

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

We are off on a buying trip to The Atlanta Gift Show to shop for our Spring/Summer 2010 collection so we wanted to leave you with wonderful videos of flowers in bloom.  We think these images beautifully capture the essence of fresh flowers – how they bud, blossom, then fade, leaving us with just the memory of their existence.

July’s Necessary Luxury – Flowers Chardonnay

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Nothing says “summer” like a crisp linen dress, sand between the toes, entertaining under the stars and a glass of chilled chardonnay.  One of our favorite vineyards and wineries happens to be Flowers, high above the Pacific Ocean on the northern Sonoma Coast.

As nursery owners in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walt and Joan Flowers had long dreamed of combining their love of wine with their passion for agriculture.  In 1990, the Flowers purchased 321 acres, a “warm site in a cool climate” uniquely suited to growing their favorite Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals.  By 2004, the property grew to include an additional 327 acres on which 47 acres of Pinot Noir vines were planted.

We love Matt Kramer‘s description of the property in his book New California Wine: “To see Flowers Vineyard and Winery is to realize just how exceptional an area Sonoma Coast West really is.  You’re just a mile or two from the Pacific Ocean as the seagull flies.  Yet the elevation puts you way above the fog line.  You’re surrounded by forests.  Almost like monasteries in the Middle Ages, you can see only a few other outposts of civilization in the form of vineyards…  The sense of isolation is genuine and strongly felt.”

Today, Flowers Winery produces 15,000 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its two estate properties, Camp Meeting Ridge and Flowers Ranch, which are sold to retailers and fine restaurants in the US and overseas.  We are looking forward to tasting the 2007 Chardonnay vintage with its layers of lemon drop, apricot and pear this weekend at our annual Fourth of July clambake.  Cheers!
