Nicole – The Queen Bee

Everyone’s been a-buzz this week with red carpet fashion reviews and we wouldn’t be The Buzz without mentioning the gorgeous custom Alexander McQueen dress Nicole Kidman wore at the Golden Globes.  The ultra-fitted, corseted black gown had a more demure neckline decorated with a bevy of golden bees and was much more wearable then most of the outfits that Sarah Burton presented on the runway last fall.

Spring Loveliness

Influenced by McQueen’s love of feminine silhouettes, romantic crinolines and accessories that are like pieces of art, Sarah’s spring 2013 collection is definitely the bee’s knees.  Mesh headpieces like beekeepers’ hats, honeycomb patterned jackets, bee studded cuffs and chokers were inspired by all that is apiary.

Crazy Clutch

The pregnant designer (due any day now!) doesn’t really know where this all started but it may be because that her studio is filled with female worker bees.  In any event, the collection is beautiful and worth all the buzz it’s getting!

Sofa Styling 1.0

Styling a sofa is one of those talents, along with accessorizing a coffee table, that not everyone is born with and many of us have to turn to the pros for ideas.  Thankfully, there have been a number of articles, blog posts and even a lookbook dedicated to the subject so have no fear, help is here!

Roxy’s Sofa

Roxy at Society Social brought 1 white sofa, 11 designers (two of whom we know personally – yeah for Eddie and Lisa) and 52 pillows together to produce Project Sofa, a lookbook that shows you what you can do with a white couch (besides cover it in throws and pray that the boys and dogs won’t stain it!)

How to Get Roxy’s Look

The March issue of HGTV Magazine features an article on how to create different pillow combinations for its cover star, a pale blue couch.  Perhaps the editors realized that the white sofa they styled five different ways online was a tad impractical for the everyday family!

Pillows Piled On

But then again, we know Kate at Centsational Girl has kids and she opted to style a cream club sofa with patterned pillows and a great rug.

Centsational Seating

Regardless of the style and color of your sofa, picking the right pillows and piling them on will add a bit of polish…  as long as they don’t end up on the floor!   Here’s to sitting pretty this weekend.

The Divine Drew

We have a confession to make…  We don’t really shop at Walmart.  But having read this interview with Drew Barrymore in Harper’s Bazaar and learning more about her new make-up line, we have to say we’re tempted.  This child star (who literally grew up in a make-up chair) and former Cover Girl model has teamed up with cosmetics powerhouse Maesa to create an expansive (180 products) and inexpensive (all under $15) collection called Flower sold exclusively at Walmart.

Flower Pow(d)er

Flower’s products are made in the USA with the same ingredients as luxury make-up.  Best of all, they include a proprietary botanical blend (Soft-Focus complex) that gives you that “lit from within” glow.  So how can these products be so budget-worthy?  No advertising – Drew is the company’s spokesperson and that’s all they need!  Her fresh, modern style is one we can definitely trust.

Shine On Lip Gloss

Nail’d It Nail Lacquer

While we subscribe to Drew’s philosophy that “happiness is what makes you pretty,” our mother (who never leaves home without lipstick) is always telling us to wear a bit more makeup so we may be investing in some Flower lip gloss, eye shadow sticks and nail polish this spring…

After all, this little flower girl grew up to be a beautiful woman so perhaps she knows a thing or two about beauty products!

Will You “Bee” Our Valentine?

Bee-smooched

With less than a week to go, Valentine’s Day is getting it’s fair share of attention and while we’re not ones to go all out in celebrating this holiday (read last year’s post here), we admire those who do.  That’s why we’ve been busy as bees gathering some bee-fitting things that might make your day more bee-dazzling…  From writing your love a letter,

Bee-prose

to keeping your lips kissably soft…

Bee-glossed

and treating yourself to a long bath…

Bee-showered

before a candlelit dinner…

Pretty Purples in Lantern Vase

Who says country and couture can’t come together to create a floral collection that is on the one hand elegant and pretty yet on the other, relaxed and comfortable?  This sense of approachable luxury is what we tried to capture in our new Spring/Summer 2013 collection, where rustic vases like antiqued lanterns or hobnail glass jars are paired with luscious hydrangea and peonies.

Blossoming Bedding

Dahlias, Ranunculus and Roses

The present trend toward a more casual lifestyle allows us to design looser compositions to mirror what you would do with your own garden cuttings, effortless bouquets that can finish any room of the house.  Sprigs of deep purple clematis, vibrant pink geranium and pale green apple blossoms add a whimsical country touch.

Garden Glam

Pops of PInk

And our lovely orchids, whether they are oncidium or phalaenopsis, are always “planted” in naturally mossed hand-thrown terra cotta pots for that fresh from the nursery touch.

Pink Patterned Phalaenopsis

We’re heading into the city on this frigid day to finish our booth at Pier 94 and counting the days until spring!  Will you be walking the New York Gift Show this year?

P.S.  Since we’re stuck selling at the show, we’ll be back next Friday so please stay tuned!

A Succulent Setting

We’ve been toying with the idea of using succulents as place cards for our Christmas Eve dinner and wondering what we could do to make them a bit more festive.  Fortunately for us, our friend Ernesto (who owns The Oak Leaf) has come up with a new twist on the terrarium for the holiday season – glass terrarium ornaments!

Terrarium Tree

These one-of-a-kind gems also make great gifts for the plant lover on your shopping list, a secret Santa or for that someone who’s impossible to shop for.  And there’s no need to put these ornaments away once the holidays are over since they’ll stay alive all year long!

Terrarium Ornament

Each terrarium ball is thoughtfully, carefully and uniquely created by The Oak Leaf just before it’s shipped out.  That way, the plant is fresh and has been recently watered (which is great since we tend to kill any live plant that enters our home within days!)

Terrarium Trio

You can find these lovelies at The Earnest Sewn Jean shop in New York or online at Etsy – but hurry since we hear they’re selling quickly.  If you’d like to customize your own terrarium balls, you can contact Ernesto directly at oakleafshop@gmail.com.

Are you adding any new festive touches to your holiday table or tree this year?

Pastel Perfection at Pimlico

Making an Entrance

It goes without saying that one of our very favorite places to shop for unique home decor and beautiful gifts is Pimlico in New Canaan.  No trip to town is complete without popping in and seeing what owners, Melissa and Jill, have added to their elegantly curated vignettes – whether it’s a bauble from White Moth Jewelry, the latest work of local photographer Barbara Erdmann or a hand-crafted bowl by Lawrence McRae.

Baubles and Trees

While Pimlico is always a feast for the eyes, the store is magical this time of year.  From the moment you step through the entrance decked out with white birch logs and mixed garlands, you’re transported into a world of pastel prettiness and glitter.

Frosted Trees and Snowmen

Needless to say, we’re so excited to be part of Pimlico’s festive mood this year.  When Melissa, who is responsible for the holiday decor, came to us to source faux garlands and create custom boughs for the store, we were more than happy to help.  And the result speaks for itself, doesn’t it?
