Shhh… Designer Secrets Inside!

Friday, April 27th, 2012

We had a great time pouring over House Beautiful‘s colorful May issue, especially when top designers shared 101 of their best secrets.  Who knew that the best dog-proof floor covering is cowhide or that the only time white curtain lining should be used is with white curtains?  Well, we decided to put some of these designers to the test and see if they take their own advice when they design a space…

Jan Showers' Black Accents and Antiques

“Every room needs a touch of black. just as it needs at least one antique piece.” ~ Jan Showers

Tobi Fairley's Bench

“A bench at the foot of the bed should be no less than 2″ shorter than the mattress width.” ~ Tobi Fairley

Ann Wolf's Collection

“Make sure you display everything in your collection together.” ~ Ann Wolf

Lindsey Coral Harper's Wallpaper

“Use wallpaper in unexpected places: on the ceiling in a paneled room, in closets, hallways, and small foyers.  A great pattern or tecture in small spaces can be a prodigious twist!” ~ Lindsey Coral Harper

Christopher Peacock's Island

“I typically suggest an island 5′ wide by 8′ long.  You don’t want it to look like an aircraft carrier.” ~ Christopher Peacock

Peter Dunham's Curtains

“Hang curtains.  They make a room seem finished.  Think of them as the lipstick of decorating.” ~ Peter Dunham

Have you seen the issue?  What is your favorite design secret?

A Vision in Blue

The cold and rainy weather has persisted here in the Northeast but we’re not singing the blues (despite what you may have thought after Monday’s Mood!)  In fact, we’re basking in the beauty of them with this Sydney home of Nellie Tilley featured in the March-April issue of Vogue Living Australia.  It’s hard to believe that Nellie lives here with her three young boys – how does she keep the textured velvets and bright silks so spotless?!

A Friendly Family Room

Kitchen Love

This talented designer’s vision of her future home went something like this: a gorgeous, classic structure but rundown so that she could make it her own.  A 1890′s “terrace” in the Sydney suburbs was exactly what she was looking for.  “I walked in and thought, ‘This is my house’” explains Nellie, and she bought it the same day.

Divine Dining

Sitting Pretty

The end result is a light-filled space that is as elegant as it is child-friendly, a homey home filled with personality that must be the envy of the neighborhood!

Terrain… Coming Soon!

Terrain is Terrific!

A beautiful weekend and unseasonably warm temperatures (again!) have us wanting to get our hands dirty in the garden and get some planting done.  We’re hoping Terrain in Westport opens soon as it’s THE store for the gardener (even ones with two black thumbs!)

Westport Store

If the Westport Terrain is anything like the Glen Mills, PA, store, we’re in for a treat!  The DIY gardener will love the large retail space filled with everything from plants and planters to the latest in garden gear.

Spring Things

And those who would rather stick to decorating the inside of their home won’t be disappointed with the wonderful range of furniture, accessories and lighting.

April Events

Seeing as the store isn’t open yet, we might have to schedule a road trip this weekend to attend the container gardening demonstration – one of the many events scheduled for the month of April – and dine on locally sourced goodies at the cafe.

So Yummy!

For now, we’ll just have to satisfy ourselves with Terrain’s Bulletin to get updates and be inspired - we really like their “collected” series of posts!

Little Bees

With all the buzz about Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram this week, we can’t help but think Pinterest is next!  It seems that everyone (and not just us bloggers!) is pinning these days - and spending hours creating beautiful boards (much to the confusion of some husbands who still don’t get it…  Alison from My Happy Little Place had us in stitches with this post!)

Fabulous Food

Obviously, given our love for flowers, our boards tend to have a botanical bent, though we’re open to suggestions and would love to add more.  Do you follow a prolific pinner and have a favorite board?  Let us know…

Crazy for Cupcakes…

Where's the Crowd?

Oh, yes we are, and standing 42 minutes on the corner of 33rd and M Streets last week was no big deal – especially when we walked away with these beauties from Georgetown Cupcake.  So worth the wait!

Our Sweet Selection

A quick trip to DC last week had us seeing the sights, which of course included a stop at this now famous cupcakery – the first of its kind in our nation’s capital when it was founded in 2008.  Since then, Katherine and Sophie (sisters with a passion for the artful cupcake) have published a book of recipes, appeared on national TV (alongside Oprah and Martha Stewart!) and launched their own series on TLC!

You Can Make Your Own!

These sweet treats are as delicious as they appear, given their natural ingredients…

Buttercream Anyone?

and beautiful packaging.  No need for a special occasion to indulge in one of these!

Pretty Packaging

Thank goodness the company had the foresight to open a store in Soho so we don’t have to travel too far to satisfy our urge… then again, we can order online from their website and save ourselves the wait!

Mother's Day Delights

P.S.  For another sweet treat, don’t forget to enter our giveaway of an autographed copy of Phoebe Howard’s first book, The Joy of Decorating!  Click here for more information…
